Former Chelsea defender, Kenneth Omeruo, might have inadvertently indicted the Super Eagles coach, Jose Peseiro, after claiming that the current Super Eagles squad is better than the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winning team.

Omeruo made the assertion, while speaking ahead of Nigeria’s 2023 AFCON second-leg tie against Guinea-Bissau billed for Monday evening.

Super Eagles lost the first leg of the double header encounter against the Djurtus of Guinea-Bissau at the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja on Friday 0-1.

The Djurtus scored the only goal of the match 29th minute into the tie, when an inviting long ball split the Super Eagles’ defence and fell to a chasing Mama Samba Balde who dispatched the ball through Francis Uzoho’s leg.

Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, Omeruo, who was a member of the 2013 AFCON winning squad that had the likes of John Obi Mikel, Vincent Enyeama, Victor Moses, Emmanuel Emenike, Sunday Mba, Ahmed Musa, Ogenyi Onazi, Ambrose Efe, others, said the current squad is good enough to avenge the first leg defeat to Guinea-Bissau.

He said, “Believe me, we have better players with better quality now than we did when we won the AFCON in 2013 and this is why I believe it’s something we can definitely do [beat Guinea-Bissau in the second-leg].

“And my role is to do my best on the pitch and try to advise, especially the new players coming in.”

Meanwhile, there are indications that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) may terminate the appointment of Peseiro if the team fails to beat Guinea-Bissau in the second leg of the Group A tie after he was given a one-match ultimatum.
