Odinkalu faults Supreme Court for foot dragging on Rivers Emergency Rule 85 days after suit was filed
Human Rights defender and professor of law, Chidi Odinkalu, has faulted the Supreme Court for failing to make pronouncement 85 days after governors of the Peoples Democratic Party filed a suit challenging the emergency rule declared by President Bola Tinubu.
The suit marked SC/CV/329/2025 was initiated by PDP governors from Adamawa, Enugu, Osun, Oyo, Bauchi, Akwa Ibom, Plateau, Delta, Taraba, Zamfara, and Bayelsa. Although the suit is dated March 20, it was filed before the apex court on April 8.
Odinkalu, in a post on his X handle, contrasted the delay of the Supreme Court in ruling on the Emergency Rule and how the same court swiftly made pronouncement within 48 days on local government autonomy filed by the Attorney General.
The post by Odinkalu on X reads: “On 25 May 2024, the Attorney-General of the Federation filed the case on LG autonomy with @SupremeCourtNg. 48 days later, On 11 July, 2024 the court announced judgment
“On 9 April 2025, 11 Govs sued @NigeriaGov (Nigerian government) before @SupremeCourtNg (Supreme Court) on Rivers Emergency. 85 days later, the case gathers dust.”
