Obi says security under Obasanjo, Yar’Adua was better because govs were allowed to take charge

Obi also advocated for more powers for governors to effectively tackle the security challenges in their states

Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the February 25, 2023 election, Peter Obi, has explained why security in the country was much better when former Presidents, Olusegun Obasanjo and Umaru Musa Yar’Adua were in the saddle.

According to him, the state governors were in charge of security in their respective states during the two administrations, unlike what is obtainable now.

Obi made this known, while addressing issues relating to insecurity at the Annual Lecture and International Leadership Symposium of the Centre for Values in Leadership (CVL), in Lagos on Tuesday.

He also recalled that the former presidents authorised governors to act on some matters of security.

Speaking during the well attended event, Obi said: “There is always between one president and another. We cannot compare President Olusegun Obasanjo presidency, Umaru Yar’Adua presidency to what we have after.

“Under Obasanjo, the governors were in charge of security. I requested that every DPOs (Divisional Police Officers) be removed and I had it.

“I took decisions on security with the authority of the President during late President Umaru Yar’adua and every month, there was a conversation between the President and the Governors.

“The governor have to be in charge of the state and be responsible.

“So, we need a President who is determined to give the governor authority to do something.”

Insecurity has assumed a very dangerous dimension in Nigeria, citizens are randomly whisked away by armed bandits for ransom or killed when they are unable to meet the demands of their captours.
