Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi has promised adequate funding for education to ensure timely graduation of students from school, saying an educated and economically active population is the bedrock of development.
“I will not allow them make you stay eight years for a five-year course; five years will be five years.
“If I have a problem with ASUU [Academic Staff Union of Universities] it is between me and them. You shouldn’t suffer for our disagreement, Obi pledged in a statement after a townhall in Port Harcourt.
“As President, I will participate in the running of the universities. I assure you that when I become President I will visit at least 10 universities in a year.
“I visited over 500 secondary schools when I was a Governor in Anambra and all their school prefects had my phone number and I deal with them directly.”

Government of youths and women
Obi said if elected in 2023, he would ensure the system works because that would be the reason for electing him, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reported by The Nation.
He promised his administration would cater for youths and women, but this does not mean old people would be neglected.
“This government is going to be youth and women government; the old people will be there as advisers, they will guide us, we will respect them but the youth will spearhead it.”
Besides increasing education funding, he said his administration will also grant autonomy to universities, grant loans to students, and ensure lecturers have not cause to strike.
Obi also met with Rivers traditional rulers in their chambers, received by the their Chairman Dsndedon Douglas Jaja, the Amanyanbo of Opobo.
