Obi denies report of being chosen as the South-East consensus candidate

A national daily reported yesterday that presidential aspirants from the South East have chosen Peter Obi as their consensus candidate. Obi says it is not true.

A leading aspirant for the presidential ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Obi, has denied a newspaper report that he has been chosen as the consensus candidate of the South East in the next election.

According to a statement made available to TheNiche by Peter Obi’s media office, they said the report was the mere wishful thinking of his supporters.

The statement reads: “The attention of Peter Obi Media Office has been drawn to a story that Mr Peter Obi has been chosen as a consensus candidate among the South-East Presidential aspirants.

“As far as we are aware, nothing of sort has happened. The truth so far is that the South East aspirants met at Abuja and part of what they discussed was the issue of consensus, about which no concrete decision has been arrived at.

“To say that Obi has already been chosen is not true since follow up actions are yet to be taken.

“Please disregard the news as being circulated as mere wishful thinking among some Obi’s admirers.”

TheNiche had reported that presidential aspirants of the PDP from the South East demanded that the Party’s presidential ticket for 2023 should be zoned to their area.

This was part of their resolution at their meeting in Abuja today, Saturday, April 9, 2022. The aspirants at the meeting were: Anyim Pius Anyim, former Senate President, Peter Obi, erstwhile Anambra State governor, Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa, renowned industrialist and Dr. Nwachukwu Anakwenze.

In a communique by the four, read by Anyim they maintained: “we have agreed to work together as a team and that “we will work together to ensure that a South Easterner emerges as PDP flag bearer.”
