Labour Party (LP) 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has frowned at the decision of the Nigerian Government to increase International Passport fee.

He made his feelings known on Thursday via a post shared on his official X page.

TheNiche had earlier reported that the Federal Government increased the price of 32-page passport with 5-year validity to N100,000, and that of 64-page passport with 10-year validity to N200,000.

While announcing the decision, the spokesman for the Nigeria Immigration Service, A.S. Akinlabi noted that the increment aims to ensure the quality and integrity of the Nigerian Passport.

He further added that that the development will become effective from September 1, 2024.

Reacting to the decision, Obi said the obsession of the President Bola Tinubu-led administration with putting a burden on the populace is becoming legendary.

He added that in a country where the new minimum wage is only N70,000, the cost of a single passport now exceeds a worker’s monthly salary.

According to the former Anambra state governor, instead of making life easier, the government keeps shifting the burden onto ordinary Nigerians.

Obi wrote, “It is alarming that the price of the international passport is higher than what workers earn in a month,”
