Obasanjo working, says Nigeria at crossroads, needs leader with right character

Olusegun Obasanjo, a diehard unity advocate who fought to keep Nigeria one, and ruled the country both as military Head of State and civilian President, says he is working with other statesmen to ensure a new and patriotic leader is elected in 2023.
He declared in Enugu his quest for an ideal Nigeria where every citizen, regardless of tribe and zone, has a sense of belonging on the fulcrum of justice, equity, fairness, and compassion.
He reminded South East leaders at Ohanaeze Ndigbo National Secretariat that Nigeria is at a crossroads in its political history and needs a President with the right character and capacity to reposition Africa’s most populous nation.
Obasanjo signed a condolence register for First Republic Aviation Minister Mbazulike Amaechi who died on 1 November.
Afenifere leader Ayo Adebanjo and Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi also signed the register.
Obasanjo said the major problem with Nigeria is the lack of upright and patriotic men to be trusted with the leadership.
“So, if I put my hand on someone, it means that comparing with the other, I see that there is a merit that will be of benefit to Nigeria. And I believe that Chief Adebanjo stands for the same thing,” he explained.

I have paid my dues, says Obasanjo
He has paid his dues to Nigeria, Obasanjo stressed, yet will not relent in pushing for justice because the problem with the country is not ethnic but national, according to reporting by Vanguard.
“I have shed my blood for this country. I have gone to prison for this country. So, what are you going to frighten or threaten me with? The only thing that my senior brother (Adebanjo) hasn’t done is that he hasn’t shed his blood, but he has gone to prison.
“What I believe and what I think Pa Ayo Adebanjo believes is not ethnic, it’s not sectional, it is not religious, it is Nigeria. I believe in equity, I believe in justice, I believe in one Nigeria.”
Obasanjo described Mbazulike as an authentic Nigerian patriot and the last of the titans, expressing regret the man would not witness the new Nigeria the laboured for.
Ohanaeze President General George Obiozor and Secretary General Okey Emuchay both pledged the group will continue to seek justice, fairness, equity, and inclusion in Nigeria as Amaechi did.
Emuchay thanked Obasanjo, Adebanjo, and Ndigbo, and stressed Ohanaeze remains committed to supporting Obi’s presidential run in the interest of fairness and equity.
