The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) has commended the Shipping Companies for their cooperation in complying with the suspension of demurrage on cargoes that landed in Lagos ports terminals from March 30, 2020 up to May 3, 2020.
This was contained in a statement by Rakiya Zubairu, the Head,
Public Relations of the Council.
It stated that the Shipping companies’ gesture was a testament to their goodwill towards Nigeria and its economy.
The Council, however, said that it had come to its notice that some freight forwarders and shippers were having difficulties in getting refunds for already charged demurrage and called on such persons to contact the Council.
The NSC said, “However, it has come to the notice of the Management of the Council that some freight forwarders and shippers have difficulties with regards to the issue of refund of demurrage charges and are still billed despite the suspension.
“Such persons are encouraged to contact the Council through the Helplines and e-mail addresses published on the NSC website (www.shipperscouncil.gov.ng) and other social media handles.”
It could be recalled that the NSC has last two weeks mandated Shipping Companies to waive their demurrage charges on containers as from 30th March to 3rd, May, 2020 to ease Importers and their Agents clearance of Cargoes during the Covid19 pandemic and the lockdown in Lagos State.
