NPA workers protest FG’s planned deduction of 50% port earnings, seek TUC intervention

The Senior Staff Association of Statutory Corporations and Government Owned Companies (SSASCGOC), has approached the leadership of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to help fight against the government’s proposed deduction of 50 percent of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) annual earnings.

Recall that the group in conjunction with the junior staff cadre, Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) had taken a stand against the plan at a joint press conference in Lagos, recently.

The two unions argued that if the revenue of the agency is slashed by half, it would not be able to meet up with its statutory mandates in the port

The group therefore requested that about 30 percent of the revenue of NPA be deducted for it to be able to function maximally

As a result, SSASCGOC said that it was seeking the intervention of the Trade Union Congress as well as the national body of SSASCGOC to fight the inglorious deduction.

Comrade Akinola Bodunde, President, SSASCGOC, Maritime Branch said the union had a meeting with TUC and SSASCGOC national body in Abuja on Wednesday in furtherance to addressing the matter.

“After a meeting with the TUC President Comrade Festus Osifo and SSASCGOC PG, Comrade Kayode Alakija in Abuja today over the issue of 50% deductions by the Federal Government, we are seriously working with Labour leadership to join us in fighting this issue.”
