Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas has dismissed allegations that he joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for financial gain.
He made the rebuttal on Wednesday while speaking with State House correspondents following his first meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja, since his formal defection.
Kefas, who was elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2023, formally joined the APC on January 31, 2026. However, some critics have accused him of making the move only after “money exchanged hands.”
Reacting to the allegations, the governor stated that his switch to the APC was driven by personal conviction and the broader interests of Taraba State, rather than monetary incentives.
“My decision was based on what is best for Taraba State and its future. Nobody gave me money to defect to the APC,” he said.

Kefas further explained that the decision followed what he calls “a carefully considered step to improve cooperation and development outcomes.”
Regarding the upcoming 2027 election, he expressed confidence in his ability to deliver Taraba State to President Tinubu.
“We have done all our mapping and planning. I am on the ground, and I have the people. The people have me, and I’ve always told them I have no business being in government other than for them,” Kefas stated.
“I have already won the mandate of the locals, and I don’t think delivering for Mr. President and myself will be a difficult job. Taraba is for him, and he’s going to get nothing less than 100 per cent.”
He attributed this optimism to ongoing grassroots projects and policies that he says have strengthened public trust in his administration.
Kefas also disclosed that his meeting with the President focused on key issues affecting the state, including security, agriculture, and social welfare.
