No election, only declaration of results, Kwara LG PDP claims

By Dele Moses, Ilorin

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State has alleged that there was no election but only declaration of result in the local government election conducted in the area last Saturday.

The party, as a result, called for the cancellation of the election and the conduct of a fresh one that would be credible.

Local government election was conducted through out the 16 councils on the state last Saturday with the state electoral body (KWASIEC) declaring results on Sunday at its headquarters in Ilorin.

The PDP spoke at its secretary on Ajase-Ipo after its review of how the election went in the local government area.

Candidate of the party in the election, Hon. Ahmed Alabi Olobi, who was accompanied by the chieftains of the part in the area told newsmen that in most wards of the area election did not take place due to alleged delibrate poor arrangement of the electoral body.

He said that in Ajase ward II the electoral officers did not come until 11am for the election that was supposed to commence by 8am.

He said the officers could not produce result sheets among the material they brought but told the electorate that the sheets would be brought later from Omu-Aran, the local government headquarters.

Olobi explained that when the electorate insisted that there would be no election until the result sheets were available, the officers left with the explanation that they were going to fetch the sheets but did not allegedly return.

“The same thing happened in Oro ward I and II, Aran-Orin, Esie/Ijan, and Ipetu wards. There was no election conducted and they announced result.

There is no election in Irepodun local government, so, where did they get the result they announced. The purported result can not stand. This is not how democracy is practised. Our state should not be seen as working against democracy; it doesn’t augur well for the state and the country at large,” he stated.

The PDP candidate asked for intervention of stakeholders to ensure that the election through the state is canceled for a fresh one to be conducted in line with democratic principles.

“We are calling on President Bola Tinubu to intervene by calling the state governor to order to make sure that a fresh election that would be free fair and credible is conducted through the state,” he pleaded.
