NLC, TUC confirm payment of new minimum wage by FG

NLC after stating that workers have started receiving the new minimum wage, urged other establishments in the country to emulate the FG

Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress TUC) on Thursday confirmed that Nigerian workers have started receiving the new minimum wage from the Federal Government.

This was disclosed in separate statements issued by NLC spokesperson, Benson Upah and the Deputy President of the TUC, Tommy Etim.

The comments came as news that the President Bola Tinubu-led administration has begun the payment of the N70,000 minimum wage and its consequential adjustments to public servants across all levels of the federal civil service made the rounds on social media.

Speaking on the commencement of the new pay, Upah, asked establishments in the country to emulate the example set by the FG.

Asked if workers have received the new wage, he said, “Yes, I think so. We ask other entities to emulate this example.”

Also speaking on the development, TUC’s Etim said, “FG’s committee on consequential adjustments already released a template, so, no one has any moral ground to delay the payment of the minimum wage. We now advise that all other parties follow suit and commence the payment of the new minimum wage.”

Meanwhile, the payment rise implementation for Nigerian workers came at the same time prices of goods and services had hit the rooftops as Headline and Food Inflation stood at 32.15 and 37.52 percent in August 2024.
