NLC had earlier mandated its members to embark on indefinite strike from December 1 in states where governments fail to comply

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has said it will not extend the December 1 deadline set for all states to comply with the implementation of the new minimum wage.
This was disclosed by the union’s Head of Protocol and Public Relations, Benson Upah, in chats with newsmen.
TheNiche had earlier reported that President Bola Tinubu signed the minimum wage bill into law on July 29, 2024.
The legislation increased the country’s minimum wage from N30,000 to N70,000.
Speaking on the need to commence the implementation of the new wage, NLC
on November 11, gave November 30 as the deadline for all state governments to comply.

The union further mandated its members to embark on an indefinite strike in states where the new minimum wage is yet to be implemented after the deadline.
While some states have signed the new minimum wage scheme into effect, states like Zamfara, Sokoto, Cross Rivers, and Nasarawa, among others, have yet to reach an agreement on improved payment for their workers.
Addressing the development, Upah said nothing has changed as per the directive to commence strike action on December 1 despite commitments from a lot of state governments to implement the new minimum wage.
“Majority is not everybody. All states must heed the union’s directive or we’ll carry out our threats,” he said.
