Stakeholders of the road traffic management have revealed that 80 to 90 percent of the road crashes are caused by human errors.
The stakeholders who spoke differently yesterday at a book, ‘Road Traffic Administration and Management in Nigeria, Insider Perspective’ launch at the FEBSON mall, Wuse Zone 4, said there is need to re orientate the motorist especially through books such as this.
Niger state governor, Babangida Aliyu, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transport, Aliyu Ahmed, said there is no better time than now to write a book on traffic management.
According to him, Niger state has improved the roads to ensure that motorists and pedestrians are secured.
The author, a senior officer of the Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS), Emeka Valentine Onyegbulem, said the need to reduce the carnages on the roads informed the publication of the eight chapters book.
He said “the number of road crashes and current changes in the traffic management informed my decision to write this book in order to impart knowledge on the populace so as to reduce the carnages on our roads. There is no passing day without hearing of accidents on our road. That’s why I put the book together to safeguard the road users,” he said.
Chairman of the occasion, Alhaji Khalifa Abdulrahman Suberu, who was represented by Hamza Omonori, commended the author for his effort in writing the book; saying that many people presently are busy writing about politics and love stories.
According to him the author is doing, “what others have ignored. Safety is paramount. Everybody is involved in traffic. Whether you own a car, a motorcycle or you are just a pedestrian, we all have to be conscious of the traffic rule as many lives are lost in road crashes everyday”
The Deputy Director, DRTS, FCT, Aminu Iro, urge the audience to write “at least three books in their lifetime – a book for children, a book on your profession and another”
Representative of Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Wobin Ayuba Gora, said, most of the factors responsible for the road crashes is the human being.
According to Gora, human beings constitute eighty to ninety of the road crashes.
He said: “How careful are you when you are behind the wheels. Impatience is a major cause of road crashes. Have you been adherent to the speed limit” He therefore urge the pedestrians to always use the pedestrian bridges and not cut corners.
“These pedestrian bridges are meant for you. In anything you do, avoid cutting corners. You need to help yourself, your family and help Nigeria to see that these crashes are reduced to the barest minimum”
Represented at the event also were Senate president, David Mark and the Inspector General of Police, Sulaiman Abba.
