The Director General of Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dakuku Peterside, is yet to recover from public condemnation over the wastage of over N300 million he and the Transportation Minister, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, allegedly squandered on an IMO election jamboree in London last week.
He has again hinted of planning to pull about N2 billion out of the coffers of the agency to sponsor the nine months mandatory seatime training for 286 cadets onboard foreign vessels.
This is as the House of Reps Committee on Maritime Education and Safety is believed to have directed the Interim Management Committee set up by the Transportation minister and led by Chief Adebayo Sarumi to stop parading itself as such and to discontinue its assignment, having declared the ministerial committee illegal.
The House Committee that visited MAN Oron on Wednesday as part of its oversight function reportedly said that the minister acted ultra vire and in bad faith in constituting the Interim Management Committee (IMC).
The lawmakers however congratulated the newly appointed rector of MAN, Commodore Duja Effedua (rtd), for his appointment. The rector was on ground to receive the lawmakers and took them around the academy.
