The President-General of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, has praised the Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dayo Mobereola, for his pivotal role in facilitating the successful signing of a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between MWUN and Melsmore Marine.

The recently signed agreement officially recognizes the unionization of workers at Melsmore Marine Limited, a shipping company headquartered in Victoria Island, Lagos, marking a new era of cooperation between management and labour within the organization.

According to Comrade Bunu, the CBA signing represents “a triumph of dialogue, fairness, and leadership,” crediting Dr. Mobereola for his proactive and balanced mediation throughout the process. He described the NIMASA boss as a “thorough, disciplined, and visionary administrator” whose deep understanding of maritime labour relations helped steer both parties toward a peaceful and mutually beneficial outcome.

“It takes a leader with character and experience to stand between two strong sides and inspire trust. Dr. Mobereola demonstrated this in action,” Bunu said, noting that the Melsmore management’s willingness to engage with the union was a clear reflection of their commitment to workers’ welfare and industrial ethics.

The MWUN President-General further emphasized that the agreement underscores the importance of fair remuneration and improved welfare for workers, stating that companies that prioritize employee wellbeing are more likely to achieve sustainable growth and productivity.

He also commended NIMASA’s Executive Director for Labour and Cabotage Services for supporting the process and ensuring equity for both parties.

“NIMASA once again proved to be a responsible regulator, one that listens, mediates, and builds bridges between labour and industry players,” he added.
