Award-winning singer, Nikki Laoye, has received another award. This time, it is the 2015 Humanitarian Personality of the Year Award.
Oyenike Laoye-Oturu, which is her real name, received the honour at a well-attended World Humanitarian Day event at Oriental Hotel, Lekki, Lagos on August 19.
This is Nikki Laoye’s third humanitarian award in recognition of her passion and service as an advocate for people with disabilities and persons of national concern such as internally-displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees.
She has been working via her Angel 4 Life Foundation.
A global day of recognition, World Humanitarian Day was celebrated in Nigeria by Nigeria/USA-based organisation, World Hope Foundation, with a special seminar and honorary awards event. Tagged ‘The Nigeria Celebrities for Charity Awards’, the annual event was created to inspire celebrities, corporate organisations, and everyday citizens to become involved in the generous act of giving.
She received a creatively designed ‘Hands of Love’ statuette with her name and award category engraved on it to commemorate the World Humanitarian Day.
The organisers said the decision to award her came after two years of research on Nigerian celebrities working on humanitarian causes, and the singer emerged as the most consistent celebrity serving on the field for the past five years. Some of her foundation’s projects include: ‘The Isaac Olushola Educational Project for Students with Disabilities’ and ‘The Buy a Cane Project’ (a mobility aid project for the visually-impaired community).
World Hope Foundation also noted her recent role as the Celebrity Voice for the Federal Government agency, National Commission for Refugees, National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) South West.
The singer’s foundation has been working with NCFRMI and other agencies via their humanitarian projects like The Angel Relief Fund (TARF) and School Without Walls Project to further support the ongoing relief works for families displaced by the Boko Haram terror attacks from Northern Nigeria by providing food, clothes, medical supplies and also supporting the education of the children as they rebuild their lives in IDP camps across Nigeria.
The gold-plated plaque was presented to Nikki Laoye by Fola Kudehinbu, MD Fountain Initiative for Social Development (FISD), and supported by the main speaker of the event, Oyebisi Oluseyi, Executive Director, Nigeria Network of NGOs, and Oludotun Olugbemi (CEO/Founder, World Hope Foundation).
