Nigerians speculate likely killers of NECO Registrar

Nigerians are shocked that in 48 hours, two prominent Nigerians have been assassinated by persons whose identity remains unknown.

Barely 24 hours after a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ahmed Gulak, who was killed in Imo by gun wielding men on May 31, the Registrar of the National Examination Council (NECO), Godswill Obioma, was also reportedly murdered in his home in Minna.

The manner of death of the Registrar is still being disputed. The son of the deceased, Prince Godswill Obioma, claimed that his father died of heart attack. But Peoples Gazette claimed to have spoken with the deceased’s wife, Elizabeth Obioma. who alleged that some killers strangled him in his home.

Gulak was reportedly shot while heading to the Owerri airport from the airport. The police claimed to have found and killed the assassins. But Obioma, according to the Peoples Gazette, quoting the deceased’s wife, wife, was strangled to death.

A former chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, gave the hint that those who murdered the NECO Registrar may be his colleagues at the Federal Ministry of Education.

“Godswill Obioma, the Registrar-General of #NECO, who had been at odds with some of the senior folks in the Fed Min of Education, was strangled to death last night in Minna, Niger, State, in North-Central #Nigeria.”

A journalist, Chuks Akunna, dropped another hint: “At about 7am May 24, 2021, we spoke on the ongoing Senate probe of N6.5b contracts. Said his predecessors were uncomfortable, but that he wouldn’t speak “for now”. Last night he was murdered in his Minna house. RIP Prof.”

A former minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode added another angle to it: “On Sunday, Ahmed Gulak, a prominent Northerner,was killed in Owerri. Threats of reprisals were made. On Tuesday, Godswill Obioma, a prominent Igbo & Registrar of NECO,was killed in Minna. The killers stormed his home, strangled him & left without taking anything. It begins!”
