Nigerian president makes New Year broadcast, mourns Iweze

President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria will make a New Year broadcast to the nation on Friday, January 1, 2021 at 7am.

In a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant to the President (Media & Publicity), Garba Shehu,

television, radio and other electronic media outlets were enjoined to join the network services of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), respectively, for the broadcast.

Meanwhile, the president has condoled with the Iweze family of Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State, the Nigerian Army, friends and colleagues of Major General Cyril Iweze, who passed away recently.

The president described Iweze as an officer and gentleman, who distinguished himself in the military, holding key positions from a young Company Commander, to Chief of Operations at Army Headquarters.

He also said that Iweze was Chief of Staff, ECOMOG, between 1990 and 1991.

Commending the discipline and gallantry of Gen Iweze to younger officers, Buhari urged them to emulate the departed, who was severally decorated with many service medals.

He prayed that the soul of the deceased will rest in peace, asking God to comfort all those who mourn him.
