Nigerian netizens clinch fifth spot, lag behind Kenyans and South Africans

Nigerian netizens lag behind those in Kenya and South Africa yet managed to clinch fifth place among daily social media users worldwide in 2024, despite economic hardship and high cost of data, according to figures compiled by Cable.co.uk and We Are Social.
The ranking posted on X (Twitter) at the weekend by World of Statistics calculated that Nigerians spend an average 3 hours and 23 minutes per day online even among countries whose populations are less than half of Nigeria’s 220 million.
Others in the top five out of 19 countries covered are Kenya, where people spend the most time on social media (3 hours and 43 minutes daily), followed by South Africa (3 hours and 37 minutes), Brazil (3 hours and 34 minutes), and The Philippines (3 hours and 33 minutes).
The others where people spend more than three hours a day on online consumption are Colombia (3:22), Chile (3:11), Indonesia (3:11), Saudi Arabia (3:10 minutes) and Argentina (3:8 minutes).
According to the data, countries outside Europe where netizens spend less than three hours per day on social media include Ghana (2:43), Egypt (2: 41),Thailand (2: 30).
Named among European countries are Portugal (2:23), Romania (2:20), and Italy (2:17).
