Nigeria regained the top spot in Group A after exacting revenge on Guinea-Bissau in the second leg of the double header of 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier played at the Estadio 24 de Septembro Stadium in Bissau on Monday evening.
The Super Eagles lost the first leg of the encounter against the Djurtus 0-1 at the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja on Friday.
Guinea-Bissau scored the only goal of the match 29th minute into the tie, when an inviting long ball split the Super Eagles’ defence and fell to a chasing Mama Samba Balde who dispatched the ball through Francis Uzoho’s leg.

However, Moses Simon’s goal from the penalty spot in the 30th minute was enough to give Jose Peseiro’s men a 1-0 win in the reverse fixture four days after their shock defeat in the hands of the less fancied Djurtus.
The result takes Nigeria back to the summit of Group A with nine points, but they are closely followed by Guinea-Bissau who have 7 points.
Super Eagles’ slim margin win over their hosts also ended a four-match losing streak for the three-time African champions.
Meanwhile, Sierra Leone who occupy the third place in the group with five points are expected to take on Sao Tome and Principe who are bottom with just one point on Wednesday.
