Ndume goes to jail for failing to produce Maina in court

-

The senator representing Borno South in the National Assembly, Ali Ndume, has been committed to prison for failing to produce Abdulrasheed Maina, in court.

Maina, the chairman of the Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT), is standing trial for allegedly stealing billions of naira from the Nigerian government.

He had been a fugitive of the law during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, but returned to face his trial following which he was granted bail. Ndume became his surety, staking the sum of N500 million as bail bond.

Maina has now refused to appear in court on the several trial dates, leaving Ndume with the responsibility of producing him in court or forfeit his bail bond. Ndume was unable to do both.

Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court Abuja then remanded Ali Ndume in Kuje Correctional Custody, for his inability to produce the absconded Chairman of the defunct Pension Reform Task Team, Abdulrasheed Maina in court. He would remain in the prison custody until he is able to mobilize the N500 million and give it to the federal government in lieu of Maina.
