The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has hosted the official launch of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Africa – Broadband Maps initiative in Abuja. The initiative is a landmark project aimed at enhancing broadband infrastructure across Africa.
Africa-BB-Maps initiative, funded by the European Union, seeks to establish harmonized national broadband mapping systems in 11 Sub-Saharan African countries, including Nigeria. The project is a key step towards bridging the digital divide and promoting digital transformation across the continent.

The broadband mapping project is expected to provide accurate and up to date data on broadband infrastructure, enabling policymakers and service providers to make informed decisions for planning and expanding internet access a move that will foster economic growth and digital inclusion.
Speaking at the event, NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Aminu Maida, described the initiative as a critical tool for digital planning, noting that reliable data is essential to achieving Nigeria’s national broadband goals.
The ITU Africa-BB-Maps project will support the development of targeted strategies for broadband expansion and improved service quality, in line with Nigeria’s digital economy agenda.
With strong backing from the EU and ITU, Nigeria is set to take a major leap forward in digital infrastructure development reinforcing its commitment to universal broadband access, economic development, and regional leadership in digital transformation.
