The former chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Ikeja branch Barrister Adesina Ademola Ogunlana has passed on.
Ogunlana was reported to have slumped in his chambers on Tuesday evening at Onipani , along Ikorodu road and died on the morning of Wednesday August 7.
A lawyer, publisher and human rights activist, Ogunlana who died at the age of 60 celebrated his 60th birthday with a lecture at the Ikeja Bar Center.
Ogunlana is known for his many battles against the oppression of the people. He was one of the leading lawyers that fought for the victims of the #Endsars protests in Lagos in 2020.
He was the publisher of ‘Squib’ a magazine devoted to exposing the rot and corruption in the judicial system. He also used the magazine to monitor Lagos State judges, their activities and performance on their jobs.
NBA mourns Ogunlana
Upon receiving the sad news of their member, the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) announced the passing of the past chairman of the NBA Ikeja branch, Adesina Ademola Ogunlana.
In a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Akorede Habeeb Lawal, the association said it received the sad news in the early hours of today, August 7, 2024
“During his chairmanship from 2016 to 2018, Mr Ogunlana played an active role in leading the protest against the increase in the Land Use Charge introduced by the Lagos State Government in 2018.”
NBA is saddened that at the time when the country’s citizens sought guidance from conscientious members of the legal profession, the passing of Adesina Ogunlana was a significant loss, as he was a true activist.
Mr Ogunlana is known for his dedicated commitment to the rule of law, effective administration of justice, and protection of human rights, as he was also actively involved in the Nationwide Hunger Protest in Lagos last week.
“Through his work as an advocate in the courtroom and as the publisher of Squib Magazine, Mr. Ogunlana, who recently celebrated his 60th birthday, left a lasting impact on the legal profession.
“The NBA and the legal community will miss Adesina Ogunlana, but more so will Nigeria.
“To his immediate family, friends, and members of the NBA Ikeja Branch, the NBA extends its deepest condolences.
“Please know that you are not alone in your grief; we share in your sorrow but find comfort in the legacy Adesina Ogunlana left behind. May Almighty God comfort us all” NBA stated prayerfully.
