The Nasarawa State Ministry of Justice has requested the governor of the state, Abdullahi Sule, to sign the death warrant of Timilehin Ajayi, the gospel singer sentenced to death by hanging for the killing of his girlfriend.

In January this year, Timilehin Ajayi was arrested in Nasarawa State while attempting to dispose of the severed head of a 24-year-old Youth Corps Member, Salome Adaidu, who was at the time serving in Abuja.

Following his arrest, he was charged and arraigned before the state High Court in Lafia on one count of culpable homicide, contrary to Section 221 of the Penal Code of Northern Nigeria, which carries the death penalty.

Five months after the dastardly act, the gospel singer was sentenced to death by hanging.

Timilehin Ajayi has not appealed the conviction more than 90 days after, closing further opportunity to do so.

The foreclosure of any chances of appeal means the governor could choose to sign the death warrant of the convict.

Commissioner of Justice and Attorney General of Nasarawa State, Isaac Danladi, said his office is already putting together the request for the governor of Nasarawa State to approve the execution of Timilehin Ajayi.

When asked by journalists about the latest on the case with Timilehin, he said, “You know that it is the prerogative of the governor to make this decision. We are compiling our facts and figures, and I can assure you that in no distant time, the facts will be presented to our principal for further necessary action.”
