The Oyo State Governor, the forward-looking Seyi Makinde, has reduced tuition at the state’s university, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) in Ogbomosho by at least 25 percent amid applause from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).
Makinde’s gesture, at a time income of families are severely strained due to high prices of goods and services, is a sharp contrast to his counterpart in Kaduna who increases the misery of parents by jerking up tuition by at least 500 percent.
In the Kaduna State University, tuition were raised from N26,000 to N150,000 for students in the Faculty of Arts, Management and Social Sciences.
In the Faculty of Medicine, the tuition was also raised from N26,000 to N300,000 for Kaduna State Indigenes. Non-indigenes are to pay N500,000.
In LAUTECH, the school fee of a fresher is likely to be about N140,000 for indigenes, while non indigenes pay an extra N30,000.

The 25 per cent reduction in fees by Makinde drew commendation from the NANS South-West zone.
The commendation is contained in a statement issued in Ibadan on Wednesday by the South-West Coordinator of NANS, Olatunji Adegboye.
The association, which described the tuition fees reduction as a sign of commitment towards making education accessible and affordable, said it would enhance LAUTECH’s status.
According to the statement, the tuition fee reduction is a welcome development to LAUTECH students and the entire students in the South-West.
“The news about LAUTECH tuition fees reduction came at a time when the global economy is facing the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We acknowledge this decision of the government of Oyo State as a remarkable sign of commitment towards making education affordable to the masses in the state despite the economic challenges.
“The Oyo State Government should not stop at that but to further complement it with developmental projects on the campus, as well as provision of adequate training for the staff of the university,” NANS said.
The association implored other state governments in the South-West zone to come up with policies and actions that would enhance affordable quality education for the masses.
According to him, the South-West zone is known to be the source of formal education in the country and the heritage must be sustained.
