The Nigerian Masses Alliance For Local Government Autonomy (NALGA), a Civil Society Organisation (CSO), has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and the Supreme Court for advancing local government autonomy across the country.
The group highlighted President Tinubu’s commitment to transforming local governments, recognizing his determination and sincere dedication to grassroots governance as essential for the nation’s overall development.
In a statement signed by NALGA National President, Com. Olaniyan Adewale, and National General Secretary, Com. Sodiq Sonibare, the group described the Supreme Court’s judgment as a transformative decision that promises significant change for local governments and grassroots communities.
“This landmark judgment, delivered on July 11, 2024, marks a ‘Democratic Victory’ for the 774 local government areas of Nigeria. It ensures total administrative and financial independence for local governments, breaking free from the long-standing control of state governors,” the statement read.
NALGA expressed deep gratitude and joy, celebrating this milestone alongside millions of Nigerians. The organization commended President Tinubu, calling him a true democrat with an uncommon passion for grassroots governance.
“An autonomous local government is the closest arm of government to the people, understanding and addressing the needs of grassroots communities effectively. This development is transformational and heralds a drastic and radical change that will redirect the fortunes of local governments and the grassroots masses,” the statement continued.
The group emphasized that this victory affirms President Tinubu’s ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’ for Nigeria, manifesting positively for democracy and impacting the common man at the grassroots.
NALGA also highlighted its long-standing advocacy for local government autonomy, acknowledging the Supreme Court judgment as the culmination of years of struggle. The organization noted the significance of the 2022 Administrative Order 10, which granted financial autonomy to local governments, but was overturned by the Supreme Court following a suit by state governors.
“Today, history has been made, putting an end to decades of abuse and emasculation of local governments. True democracy is here to stay, courtesy of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, the ‘Renewed Hope Advocate’ of the Nigerian polity since independence,” the statement concluded.
NALGA called on the National Assembly to address any remaining constitutional issues to ensure the effective implementation of the Supreme Court judgment and prevent any administrative interference by state governors.
