Mutfwang described the renaming as a profound honour, not only to Gowon, but also to the people of Plateau State

Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for honoring former Head of State, Gen Yakubu Gowon, by renaming the University of Abuja (UniAbuja) after him.
TheNiche had earlier reported that the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, on Monday revealed that the federal government changed the name of University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University.
He disclosed this to journalists at the State House after a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking about the gesture, Governor Mutfwang described the renaming as a profound honour, not only to Gen. Gowon, but also to the people of Plateau State, his birthplace.
He went on to highlight the selfless service and exceptional leadership of the former Head of State, which according to him played a pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s unity, fostering peace, and promoting national cohesion.

He noted that the former leader’s wisdom and diplomatic acumen were instrumental in seeing Nigeria through one of its most turbulent periods, leaving an indelible mark on the nation’s history.
“General Yakubu Gowon is a cherished father figure and a beacon of peace to millions of Nigerians,” Governor Mutfwang said.
“His life and legacy continue to inspire change and serve as a guiding light for our nation.”
Yakubu Gowon was a former Head of State and Nigeria’s leader during the civil war between 1967.
He became head of State following the Coup and Counter Coup of 1966 which led to the death of the then Prime Minister, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Sardauna of Sokoto, Sir Ahmadu Bello, Western Regional Leader, Samuel Ladoke Akintola, Minister of Finance, Festus Okotie-Eboh.
The Coup and the Counter Coup also claimed the crop of the leadership of the Nation’s Military including head of State, General Aguiyi Ironsi, Colonel Adekunle Fajuyi and many others.
