Murder in church: Ebonyi police nab suspect

Ebonyi State Police command has arrested one Chukwuka Ben for allegedly killing a 72-year-old Fidelis Uhuo  at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Umuoghara in Ezza North Local Government Area of the state.

Sources said that the suspect had misunderstanding with the Priest-in- charge of the church (name withheld) some days before the incident.

The suspect was said to have stormed the church in the morning to kill the Priest but did not see him in the church.

In a fit of anger, he descended on a member of the church and a servant of the priest, one Fidelis Uhuo, who was around and killed him.

Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Ebonyi State Command, ASP George Okafor, said, “It was on the 2nd of May, 2016  that information got to the Police that one Fidelis Uhuo of Ugalaba village of Umuoghara of about 72 years was murdered by one Chukwuka Ben of same address.

‘‘The corpse of the deceased was found within the church premises of St. Peter’s Catholic Church. He ran away after the act and was later arrested and presently he is cooperating with the police to find out what actually transpired that led to the killing of the deceased’’.

ASP George also confirmed the killing of a 28-year-old man at Umuebe in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of the state, Chibueze Okeh, by one Ifeanyi Nweke (23).

Okafor said, “On the 30th of April, 2016 at about 7:30 in the morning there was a fight between one Chibueze Okeh (28) and Ifeanyi Nweke (23). Ifeanyi Nweke used stick and hit Chibueze on the head and he sustained serious injuries.

‘‘The victim was rushed to  Ezzamgbo General Hospital where he was being treated before he died on 1st May, 2016. It is a case of assault occasioning harm initially but when the victim gave up the ghost, it turned out to be a case of murder.

“The report was brought by the elder brother of the deceased and we are following up the matter. Two suspects have been arrested; the suspects include Nweke Ifeanyi and one other. They are in our custody cooperating with us to find out what led to the fight’’.
