John Mikel Obi, in his first game as full-time captain of Nigeria, was denied an important victory in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers by a late Mohamed Salah goal.
Etebo Oghenekaro, 20-year-old striker who still plies his trade in his homeland, scored the opening goal an hour into the game in Kaduna against Egypt when he latched onto a rebound off the woodwork, but the Super Eagles missed the chance to exchange top spot in the four-team qualification group with their opponents when Salah netted in stoppage time.
Victor Moses came on for the final 20 minutes.
After three games played, Egypt, who are managed by former Valencia and Inter Milan boss Hector Cuper, have a two-point lead over Nigeria and the two teams meet again, this time in Egypt, in four days’ time.
