Modric laments after Croatia’s 1-1 draw with Italy, says ‘Football can be very cruel’

Croatia captain, Luka Modric has admitted that football can be very “cruel” after his side conceded a very late goal in their final group match of the Euro 2024.

The Real Madrid midfielder made his feelings known on Monday, while speaking with reporters following his side’s 1-1 draw against Italy.

Modric gave Croatia the lead in the 55th minute after seeing his penalty saved during the encounter.

But Mattia Zaccagni scored in the final minute of stoppage time as Italy broke Croatia’s hearts with a late equaliser.

The result saw the defending champions, Italy progress to the last 16 of Euro 2024.

However, Croatia with two points from 3 group games will have to wait to see if they qualify as one of the four best third-placed teams.

Expressing his frustration after the encounter, Modric said: “Football can be very cruel. I want to play football forever, but we know that this is impossible.

“One day I will have to announce my retirement from playing, but I do not know when that will be.”
