Mineral production rises 39% YoY

Limestone, granite, and laterite were the three biggest minerals mined in 2021, a year in which mineral production across the board rose 39 per cent year on year (YoY) to 89.48 million tonnes from 64.29 million tonnes in 2020.
‘Mineral Production Statistics Report for 2021’ newly released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) shows Ogun topped mining states in 2021, swapping places with Kogi which came first in 2020.
Borno mined the least, the same position it had in 2020. Between Kogi and Borno was Cross River, as it also did in 2020.
“The aggregate production of mineral products in Nigeria in 2021 grew by 39.19 per cent from 64.29 million tons recorded in 2020 to 89.48 million tons in 2021, indicating an improvement in production,” the report said.

Mining contributes 5.5% to GDP
“On state profile analysis, Ogun State recorded the highest production in 2021 with 32.04 million tons, followed by Kogi with 18.40 million tons and Cross River with 11.64 million tons,” according to the NBS, per reporting by Vanguard.
“The least was recorded in Borno with 231 tons. Moreover, Limestone, Granite, and Laterite were the three biggest minerals mined in 2021.”
NBS said mining contributed 5.5 per cent to real Gross Domestic product (GDP) in the fourth quarter ended December 2021 (Q4 2021), lower than 6.09 per cent in Q4 2020.The annual growth of the sector was -7.79 per cent in 2021.
But its contribution to real GDP rose to 6.67 per cent in Q1 2022, higher than 5.5 per cent in Q4 2021.
Kogi on 12.5m tonnes produced the most in 2020
NBS ‘Mineral Production Statistics Report for 2019-2020’ shows limestone, sand, and granite were three most mined minerals in 2020 with production rising 18 per cent YoY to 64.3 million tonnes from 54.5 million tonnes in 2019.
The top three mining states were Kogi (12.5 million tonnes), Ogun (12.1 million tonnes), and Cross River (8.9 million tonnes).
“The Mining and Quarrying sector is crucial to growth in Nigeria considering the potential to export mineral resources to the rest of the world and the drive for diversification.
“Essentially, Nigeria is said to be endowed with over forty (40) types of minerals including marble, coal, iron ore, gold, silica, lead, zinc, tin ore, manganese, granite, laterite, limestone etc,” the report said, per Vanguard.
“Aggregate production in 2020 (64.3 million tons) grew by 18 per cent compared to 2019 with 54.5 million tons, indicating an improvement in production.
“In 2020, Kogi State, Ogun State and Cross River State were top three States with the largest share of production with 12.50 million tons, 12.11 million tons and 8.90 million tons respectively.
“The least State was Borno which recorded 5,060 tons.
“Similarly, Ogun State, Federal Capital Territory, FCT, and Kogi State were the top three States with the largest share of production in 2019.
“This report shows that Ogun State produced 12.55 million tons, FCT produced 10.82 million tons, while Kogi State recorded 10.11 million tons over the same period.
“Limestone, Sand and Granite were three most mined minerals in 2020, while Limestone, Granite and Laterite were the top biggest minerals in 2019.”
