Messi on Monday, October 30, took home a record-extending eighth Ballon d’Or award at an award held in Paris, the French capital.

Finishing behind him were European treble winner Erling Haaland and his fellow World Cup final giant, France’s Kylian Mbappe.

The feat came months after he finally won the World Cup with Argentina, the only trophy that was missing from his incredible collection of titles.

However, speaking on the possibility of hanging his boots recently, Messi said: “I don’t know if I have a lot or a little left, but after the career I’ve had, the only thing I have left is to continue enjoying it.

“As long as I am physically well, I will continue competing, hopefully, it will be a long time.”

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich legend, Lothar Matthaus has named Manchester City’s Erling Haaland as the player that deserved to win the 2023 Ballon d’Or.

The German while speaking about this year’s prestigious award, told Sky Germany that Haaland performed better than the Argentine captain last year.

He said: “Over the whole of last year, Haaland performed better than Lionel Messi.

“It is undeserved that Messi won. But that shows that a World Cup counts more than anything else.

For me, Haaland is the best player of the last twelve months won major titles with Manchester City [Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup in England] and broke goalscoring records in the process.

“For me, there is no way around Haaland. The choice is a farce, even though I am a Messi fan.”
