Argentina captain, Lionel Messi, has expressed surprise after his country suffered a dramatic 2-1 defeat against Morocco in their 2024 Paris Olympics opening fixture on Wednesday night.

Soufiane Rahimi put Morocco ahead after Achraf Hakimi set him up from the right following a superb passing move in the final seconds of the first half.

He then scored a brace and doubled his country’s advantage after scoring from the penalty spot in the 49th minute.

Giuliano Simeone pulled one back for Javier Mascherano’s side in the 68th to make it 2-1.

Argentina then got a boast when a massive 15-minute injury time was added at the end of 90 minutes.

Cristian Medina looked to have scored a late equalizer to secure a 2-2 draw for La Albiceleste but the game was interrupted as angry Moroccan fans entered the pitch.

After temporarily suspending the encounter for almost two hours, a VAR check later confirmed that the goal was offside and it was ruled out by the referee.

The remaining three-plus minutes were played as players re-emerged in an empty stadium.

The match eventually ended 2-1 in favour of Morocco, sparking a reaction from Messi on social media.

Taking to his official Instagram page after the match, the Inter Miami captain wrote, “unbelievable”
