Merson urges Arsenal to extend Saka, Smith Rowe’s contracts

Saka has two years left on his contract, while Smith Rowe penned down a long-term deal seven months ago, keeping him at the Emirates until 2026

Ex-Arsenal midfielder, Paul Merson, has advised his former club to sell academy graduates Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe if they fail to sign contract extensions this season.

Merson gave the piece of advice in his Daily Star column, where he warned Arsenal not to let the two players run down their current contracts. 

Both players rose through the Gunners ranks to become crucial members of Mikel Arteta’s squad and the mainstay of the North London club.

While Bukayo Saka has two years left on his contract, Emle Emile Smith penned a long-term deal seven months ago, keeping him at the Emirates until 2026. 

But Arsenal legend, Paul Merson feels the two youngsters should be tied down to a long term contract immediately, if the club doesn’t want to lose them cheaply.

He however advised the club to sell them this summer if they become contract rebels. 

He said, “They are top drawer and they are going to be vital to Arsenal finishing in the top four this season. But I think Arsenal should get them tied down now.

“They should be talking now about five year contracts. Get them signed, and if they don’t want to sign, then sell them in the summer.

“Don’t hang around and let them run their contracts down and let them go for next to nothing. Test the water because there will be teams chasing them.”
