Afrobeats singer and songwriter Inetimi Alfred Odon, popularly known as Timaya, has argued that it is better to have a “baby mama” than to tie the knot.

The ‘Dem Mama’ crooner made the assertion in a now-viral video circulating across various social media platforms.

The 45-year-old artist shared his thoughts while he and his colleague, Paul Okoye (aka Rudeboy), were giving fellow singer Phyno marital advice.

Timaya is a father of four children, whom he shares with three different women.

He had his first two daughters, Emmanuella and Gracey, with Barbara Fumnaya Nwaokolo; his son, Emmanuel, with Tamar; and his youngest child, Maya, with Dunnie Onasanya.

While advising Phyno, Timaya claimed it is better to have children out of wedlock because “marriage does not work.”

”Just born pikin, pikin go grow. This marriage thing no dey work,” he said in Pidgin, sparking mixed reactions from those present in the video.

The clip also elicited a divided response among Nigerians on social media, with many disagreeing with Timaya’s stance on matrimony.

During a 2024 interview with Naija FM, the singer revealed he remains unmarried in his 40s because he has never felt drawn to the institution.

He did, however, add that his stance might change in the future.
