Man bags 30 months in jail for calling Adamawa Governor ‘father of all thieves’

-

A businessman, Ali Yakubu Numan, will spend the next 30 months in jail over a Facebook post which he called the Adamawa State Governor, Umaru Fintiri, ‘the father of all thieves.’

Numan made the comment in July 2021 while criticizing the Adamawa State Governor, claiming that he stole hundreds of billions of Naira from state coffers.

The businessman was charged for criminal defamation and arraigned before a Yola Chief Magistrate Court II, presided over by Magistrate Japhet Basani.

On August 12, Numan was convicted and sentenced to two and a half years in prison with the option of a N50,000 fine for using abusive language against Fintiri.

He was also sentenced to six months imprisonment without the option of a fine for disturbance of public peace.

In the ruling, Magistrate Basani said that the court arrived at the verdict after it found the man guilty of the two charges brought against him by the prosecution.
