A man who allowed unfruitful cultural practices to pressure him to steal a goat to celebrate the naming ceremony of his new born baby has been arrested by police along with his alleged accomplice.
Police in Ogun arrested Akintoye Waris for allegedly stealing and slaughtering a Savannah he-goat valued at N200,000 for his child’s naming ceremony.
Ogun Police Command spokesperson Omolola Odutola disclosed on Saturday that Waris was arrested on January 2 in the Odeda area of the state, along with his alleged accomplice, Ajayi Yusuf.
Odutola narrated that the suspects allegedly invaded a farm to steal the goat, after knowing that the farm owner, simply known as Mark, had taken his cattle out of town for grazing on December 25.
According to her, when Mark returned and discovered that one of his goats was missing, a search was conducted in the community, which promoted villagers to disclose that they allegedly saw the two suspects with the missing goat on a motorcycle, heading toward Olodo town.
Acting on the tip-off, she added, detectives were immediately dispatched, leading to the arrest of the suspects in the early hours of January 2.
“During interrogation, the suspects confessed to the crime, explaining how they stole, transported, and later slaughtered the he-goat on December 27, 2024,” Odutola said.
“They disclosed that the goat was used to prepare food for the naming ceremony of Akintoye Waris’s daughter, which was held at Olodo.
“The suspects are currently in custody and undergoing further investigation at Odeda Divisional Crime branch.”
Odutota gave an assurance to concerned residents that the suspects would be prosecuted in court once the investigation is concluded, and any further developments in the case would be communicated in due course.
