At least 30 Magistrates have protested the nonpayment if their salaries for 24 months by the Cross River state government.
The protesters, dressed in their court regalia, marched to the Government House in Calabar where they registered their displeasure to the state’s governor, Professor Ben Ayade.
One of the Magistrate, Richard Edet, collapsed during the protest but was later revived by his colleagues with the aid of water and milk.
The Magistrates said since their employment two years ago, they have no earned a dime.
The protest started on Monday, January 4 by Her Worship, Safiya Iyeh Ashipu, Chief Magistrate Court in Odukpani as a one woman protest. The following day, her colleagues’ caught the bug and hit the street.
According to them, they were demanding their two years salary as they have not received a dime since their employment into the state Civil service by the Ayade led administration.
They say said 30 of them were employed from private practice while 15 others were drawn from the ministry of Justice totalling 45.
According to the Vanguard Newspaper, even the 15 who were appointed Magistrates have only been receiving salaries from their old office and not as Magistrates.
