The match started 36 minutes behind schedule due to “security reasons” after pictures emerged in the build-up of huge crowds of fans queuing to get into the stadium.

The Reds had the best of the opening exchanges between the two sides but they were unable to capitalise on their dominance, as the first half ended in a stalemate.

However, it was Read Madrid who opened the scoring in the 59th minute when Federico Valverde got the ball on the right, ran forward, and blasted a low ball across the box.

Liverpool had several attempts on target in their bid to equalise but were frustrated by a brilliant goalkeeping display by Thibaut Courtois.

The former Chelsea man tipped Sadio Mane’s attempt on to the post before keeping out Mohamed Salah late on with a superb one-handed save.

Real Madrid thereafter defended stoutly to preserve their lead, as Real Los Blancos held on to win 1-0 and lift their 14th Champions League title.
