Liverpool break Chelseas’ heart again, win FA Cup on penalties

Liverpool won the final of the Carling Cup on February 22 in the same manner, defeating Chelsea 11-10 on penalties

Carling Cup champions, Liverpool have once again defeated their West London rivals, Chelsea on penalties in this year’s FA Cup finals played at the Wembley Stadium.

The Merseyside outfit had on February 22, defeated The Blues in a similar circumstance, when they also won an intriguing penalty shoutout 11-10 to lift the Carling Cup,

With the win, Liverpool has now kept alive their hope of winning an unprecedented quadruple after a sudden-death penalty winner earned them a 6-5 victory over Chelsea.

The two sides had 27 shots, with Liverpool having the lion’s share of 17 while Chelsea had 10 before the referee signaled the end of proceedings after extra time. 

Both sides also hit the woodwork, during the 120 minutes played, making a penalty shootout inevitable in deciding the winner.

Cesar Azpilicueta’s early miss during the penalties handed Liverpool the initiative, only for Sadio Mane to see the potentially match-winning penalty saved, prompting Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel to drop to his knees and beat the Wembley turf in celebration.

Mason Mount then saw Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson superbly save his sudden-death effort, allowing Tsimikas to side-foot home and spark scenes of wild celebration in a season Reds’ fans will find hard to forget.
