Liverpool beat Chelsea on penalties to lift Carabao Cup

Liverpool had a goal disallowed in the 67th minute after Dutch defender, Virgil van Dijk was adjudged to be offside after a VAR review

Premier League heavyweights, Liverpool and Chelsea faced each other in the final of this year’s Carabao Cup at the prestigious Wembley Stadium.

The Blues booked their place in the final after dispatching Tottenham Hotspur in the semi-final while Liverpool beat North London side Arsenal to set up the encounter. 

Chelsea had three goals disallowed for offside during the encounter and will be left to rue two big misses by Mason Mount before he was substituted.

They however have keeper Edouard Mendy to thank for keeping them in the game after a magnificent display that produced a string of outstanding saves.

The incident-packed clash eventually went right down to the wire after none of the teams could find the winning goal after 120 minutes.  

Jurgen Klopp’s side eventually prevailed after beating  Chelsea 11-10 on penalties in the breathless and keenly contested encounter. 

Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, brought on in place of Edouard Mendy in extra time for the shoot-out, fired the decisive spot kick over the crossbar.

The victory means The Reds have now won the Carabao Cup for the ninth time in their history.
