Lewandowski scores hat-trick as Bayern trounce FC Salzburg

FC Salzburg produced a brilliant first leg but were outclassed by Bayern in the return leg, as Lewandowski put 3 past their goalkeeper

Bundesliga leaders, Bayern Munich hosted Austrian club, FC Salzburg at the Allianz Arena with both teams jostling for one of the eight spots in the quarter finals of the Champions League.

Robert Lewandowski scored a hat-trick inside the opening 23 minutes as Bayern Munich thrashed FC Salzburg to reach the Champions League quarter-finals.

Bayern was awarded a penalty by the referee after Maximilian Woeber was judged to have pulled Robert Lewandowski’s shirt in the penalty box.

Lewandowski then put away the spot kick in the 12th minute sending Philipp Koohn the wrong way with the right foot to give Bayern a 1-0 lead.

The Polish striker made it a brace 9 minutes later when he converted another spot kick awarded when Maximilian Woeber was again judged to have tripped him after VAR review.

Robert Lewandowski then tapped the ball into an open net with his right foot in the 23rd minute to make it 3-0 to Bayern Munich.

Serge Gnaby then scored the fourth in the 31st minute with a low shot that squirmed under Kohn, after an assist by French winger Kingsley Coman. 

Thomas Muller thumped in a fifth after the break, but the visitors got a consolation goal through Maurits Kjaergaard who scored with a powerful effort into the top-left corner to make it 5-1. 

But Julian Nagelsmann’s team were not finished, Muller finishing off a well-worked move for number six before Leroy Sane thumped home late on, as the Germans qualified on 8-2 aggregate.
