Let us go back to farm to end hunger and hardship, Abayomi advises Nigerians

By Julius Alabi, Akure

Renowned Constitutional Lawyer and Human Rights Activist, Dr Tunji Abayomi has urged Nigerians to go back to farm in order to produce enough food for the nation and reduce hunger in the land

According to him, we need to embrace agriculture so that we can feed first. “These are things we can do by ourselves and I have told my family that all of us have to go into food cultivation,” he said.

Speaking with newsmen in Akure, the Ondo State capital, Abayomi added, “there is no doubt that God has been so good to us in Nigeria and we have a lot of potentials because before the advent of oil, agriculture was the mainstay of our economy but somehow, we neglected agriculture which have greater prospects with the land we have in abundance.”

He said the major protest against hunger and hardship now is to storm farm with all our might.

“I could recall many years ago how agriculture used to be the mainstay of the nation’s economy. It is time for us now as Nigerians to rekindle our interest in farming in order to meet both local and international consumption, especially to earn foreign exchange for the country.

“I will also appeal to government at all levels to return garden farming to our school school curriculum as part of moves to inculcate agricultural entrepreneurship in young people as well as promote food security in the country.”

The Constitutional lawyer said reintroducing of the garden farming scheme across all primary and secondary schools in the country would not only encourage students to develop an interest in agriculture but for them to also leverage it as a business venture in future.

Abayomi urged Nigerians to continue supporting the present administration in its efforts to tackle the myriad of challenges facing the country and provide succor to the citizenry.
