Women and girls are indispensable in national economic development, according to Godwin Ehigiamusoe, founder of Lift Above Poverty Organisation (LAPO).
He said no appreciable development can be made on the local, national or international front without recognising girls and women as equal players in decision making and empowerment, and up skilling and investing in them.
Ehigiamusoe, who spoke at the 2015 LAPO Outstanding Women Leadership Award in Benin City, disclosed that the organisation has for over two decades been at the forefront of women’s struggle, promoting legal and policy reforms, and supporting projects that empower women socially and economically.
“By acknowledging and celebrating women achievers, the organisation ensures that the role and contributions of women, which ordinarily would not have been seen or heard, are recognised and immortalised.
“This also sends a strong signal that hard work, resourcefulness and exceptional services are inestimable and highly sought after in the society,” said Ehigiamusoe, who was represented by LAPO board Chairman, Christiana Okojie.
He added that LAPO has demonstrated commitment to poverty alleviation through innovative credit and non-credit empowerment programmes targeting disadvantaged groups.
“We in LAPO believe that there is an urgent need to address the marginalisation of women as well as acknowledge their contributions in all facets of our national life.”
Outstanding Women Leadership Award honours women who have distinguished themselves in their chosen careers and business organisations with sustainable social impact.
Awardees this year include Delta State Commerce and Industry Commissioner, Mary Iyasere (Professional Category); Happiness Omoruyi (Business Category); and Mabel Adams (Public Life Category).
