The Lamidi Apapa-led faction of the Labour Party (LP) has unveiled a candidate for the Edo governorship election slated for September 21, 2024 despite the Supreme Court recognising Julius Abure as national chairman.
This comes less than 24 hours after Olumide Akpata emerged as Edo governorship candidate at a primary conducted by the Abure-led national leadership of the LP.
Chairman of the Primary Election Committee and the Deputy Governor of Abia State, Emetu Ikechukwu, declared Akpata the party’s candidate at a governorship primary held on Friday in Benin City, Edo State capital.
Akpata, the immediate past president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), scored 316 votes to defeat other aspirants.
Kenneth Imasuagbon had seven votes, Sam Eboh also had seven votes, Angela Asom scored zero vote, Abegbe Osabhuohien and Blessing Akel had three votes each, Loretta Ogboroko got zero vote while Sergius Ogun scored four votes.

One of the aspirants, Tom Tseghohi, withdrew from the contest citing personal reasons.
However, the Apapa-led faction of the party in a letter dated February 22, 2024 and addressed to the national chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja submitted the names of the party’s governorship candidate and deputy governorship candidate respectively.
TheNiche obtained the letter on Saturday signed by Apapa who claimed to be LP acting national chairman and Saleh Lawan posing as acting national secretary.
The letter named one Anderson Uwadiae Asemota as governorship candidate while the deputy governorship candidate’s name was given as Monday Ojore Mawah.
According to the letter, the candidates emerged at a primary conducted on February 22, 2024 in Benin City.
