The Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, has insisted on Twitter ban, further threatening that the government would suspend other social media platforms that pose risk to Nigeria’s unity.
Lai Mohammed, while speaking at the House of Representatives Joint Committee on Information, Justice, and Communication on Tuesday, June 22, accused Twitter of acting as a platform for the destabilization of Nigeria.
He said: “We want Twitter to be registered first in the country before they can operate.”
Lai Mohammed who had earlier claimed through press statements that Twitter has reached out to the government for talks, changed the story when the legislators asked if any channel of dialogue had been opened with the microblogging app. He answered: “We tried to but they rebuffed us. They are not known to us. They are not registered, but we hope we will be able to engage them.”
The committee members disagreed with the decision and action of the executive to suspend Twitter, stating that the country was sliding into totalitarianism.
