Lagos teacher arraigned for slapping three-year-old pupil, pleads not guilty

Stella Nwadigbo, a teacher accused of physically assaulting a three-year-old pupil at Christ-Mitots International School in Ikorodu, Lagos, appeared before Magistrate M.O. Kusanu at the Ogba Magistrate Court on Thursday. 

Nwadigbo was arrested after a viral video showed her repeatedly slapping the child, identified as Abayomi Michael, during a class.

The case has drawn widespread attention, with many condemning the act and calling for stricter measures to protect children in schools. 

The teacher pleaded not guilty to two charges before Magistrate M.O. Kusanu.

Nwadigbo’s lawyer applied for bail which the court set at N200,000. The court added that she should produce two sureties.

The suspect was remanded in Kirikiri correctional facility pending when she meets the bail conditions.

The case was adjourned to January 18, 2024 for trial.

Nwadigbo has since been suspended by the school’s management while Abayomi was reportedly hospitalised following the incident.
