Adegboruwa says Muslim-Muslim ticket, insensitive choice

By Emma Ogbuehi

Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, has joined many Nigerians kicking against the choice by the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu of Senator Kassim Shettima as running mate, a fellow Muslim as running mate in 2023 election.

The Lagos lawyer, who expressed his opinion in his Facebook social media wall, described the Muslim-Muslim ticket as an insensitive choice. A Muslim-Muslim ticket in present-day Nigeria is fuel for Boko Haram, incentive for ISWAP and a call for more terrorists, he argued.

Tinubu had against the advice and expectations of many settled for Shettima, former Borno state governor, arguing that he consulted widely and was torn between choosing a Christian or Muslim as running mate. He said after giving thought to the debate presented by his advisers, he decided to pick Shettima, a man who shared his vision of rebuilding Nigeria.

He said he made the choice because he believes that Shettima could help him bring the best governance to all Nigerians, regardless of their religious affiliation or considerations of ethnicity or region.

Adegboruwa however scoffed at the explanation, stressing that it is a terrible choice.

He wrote; “It is a terrible choice, in one million ways!!!

“Nigerians, whether Muslims, Christians, Traditionalists, etc, should reject APC with their votes come 2023.

“A Muslim-Muslim ticket in present-day Nigeria is fuel for Boko Haram, incentive for ISWAP and a call for more terrorists.

“Unless of course those parading the ticket are themselves complicit.

“There is no better way to insult our sensibilities.

“I pray it is not true”.

Earlier, the APC National Legal Adviser, Daniel Bwala, had resigned from the party over the choice, saying that it was against his conviction and agenda at galvanizing the country.

A tweet by activist, Aisha Yesufu, on her Twitter handle @AishaYesufu, has also condemned the ticket as an insult to fairness.

It read: “A Muslim-Muslim ticket is an insult to fairness, equity and justice. It is see finish. It is impunity of the worst kind. It is disrespect to people of the federal Republic of Nigeria. It shows they have little regards for people and think their structure is more valuable.”
