Labour Party considering expelling Peter Obi, says chieftain

Abayomi Arabambi, the factional National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party (LP), has announced plans to convene a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting aimed at expelling Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, for alleged anti-party conduct.

Arabambi accused Obi of violating party principles by aligning with a coalition backed by the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

He argued that the former Anambra State governor’s actions amount to dual party affiliation, which he described as unconstitutional.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Tuesday, Arabambi said, “We’re convening a NEC meeting where Peter Obi will be expelled. You know he was on suspension before he went ahead to do the anti-party activities. You don’t go and join a political party, and the same time you still put your leg in another political party. He knows it’s unconstitutional to belong to two political parties at the same time.”

The LP factional spokesperson further accused Obi of being the root cause of the party’s internal crisis and questioned his capacity to lead a political platform effectively.

Obi has denied formally joining the party despite his visible involvement in the launch of the ADC-led coalition. In a recent interview, he clarified that his support for the movement does not translate to party membership.

The former governor has also restated his presidential ambition, emphasising that he remains committed to offering leadership to Nigeria.
